ABOUT THE ARTIST, Steven Bloom
Steven was born in San Mateo, California in 1954 to parents Leo and Gayle Bloom, a fireman and homemaker, the eldest of four children. He remembers being interested in art at the age of four years old.  He won his first art competition at the age of nine years old in the San Francisco Chronicle’s weekly childrens art contest and again at eleven years old. From then on, he never lost his passion for art; drawing and painting informally until high school. As a freshman at a high school in San Jose, California, he was initially influenced by art teacher Jean Ward, a black activist who was an intense and innovative instructor. She taught him to be passionate about art in a way that he hadn’t experienced before. At Cal State University, Sacramento, Steven was fortunate to study under renowned artists and professors Joan Moment, Jack Ogden and James Suzuki, who each shaped his development as an artist and painter. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Art at CSUS in 1977.  Steven's interest in sculpture was tempered by the instruction of David Foster, MFA, San Francisco State University. He enjoyed the three dimensional aspects of the medium. He was influenced by the Impressionistic and Realist Movements and combined the two, creating his own style.
